As I Am - Autism Friendly School

Autistic and neurodivergent students.

Over the past two years, the school has taken part in the autism charity AsIAm’s Autism Friendly Schools Project. This is an initiative  that supports schools in becoming more inclusive for autistic and neurodivergent students.

The programme involves schools reflecting on their practices, identifying challenges and solutions, creating an inclusive culture and building knowledge and understanding of autism and neurodiversity among staff and students.

Speech and Language Therapist

As part of this project, we undertook staff training facilitated by a Speech and Language Therapist on the use of visual supports to meet the communication needs of autistic children.

We have also adapted the school environment, making it more visually supportive with the addition of communication boards in different areas around the school.

This year’s theme was on neurodiversity, during which we held a themed week that focused on recognising and embracing the unique strengths and perspectives of individuals with conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodevelopmental differences.

Better support for autistic children

Our school is proud to be part of the AsIAm Autism-Friendly Schools Project, which supports us in creating an inclusive and understanding environment for all our pupils. Through this initiative, we are learning how to better support autistic children by promoting awareness, acceptance, and practical strategies across the whole school community.

Taking part in the project helps us celebrate the strengths and individuality of every child. It also encourages kindness, empathy, and respect—values that benefit every learner. By working with AsIAm, we are building a school culture where all children feel seen, supported, and able to thrive.
