Culture Week

Culture Week is one of the most exciting weeks in The Mon every year. It’s a time when we celebrate all the different cultures, languages, and traditions that make our school such a special and welcoming place.

One of the boys’ favourite activities is the AfroTrad Drumming Workshop. Every class gets a turn to try out traditional Irish and African drums. The hall fills up with rhythm and energy—and lots of happy faces too! During the week, the boys also enjoy doing arts and crafts inspired by countries from around the world, like self-portraits and colourful masks that brighten up the school walls.

The ‘Hello Wall’ is another lovely part of the week. Each boy writes “hello” in a different language and adds a little drawing or flag to show something from his culture. It’s great fun to see all the different ways we can say hello and to learn about each other.

But the best day of all is World Food Day! This much-anticipated event has been a mainstay at The Mon for nearly ten years. First introduced by Mrs. Liz O’Grady, the day has grown into a vibrant celebration of the school’s rich cultural diversity. Families cook tasty, homemade dishes from their home countries and share them with the school. The smells, the colours, and the kindness make it a day to remember.

We end the week with a fun quiz and a chance to show or tell something special from our own background. Culture Week reminds us how lucky we are to be part of such a kind and colourful school.
