Here at The Mon, we’re big believers in learning by doing – and that’s exactly what STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is all about. Whether it’s building, testing, coding or exploring, our boys get stuck in and have great fun while picking up important skills along the way.
During the 2024/25 school year, we were proud to be part of the Weave Project – a brilliant initiative that brought STEM to life in the classroom. The idea was to spot a real problem in our local area and come up with creative solutions using LEGO. Working together, the boys designed and built their projects, and later got the chance to present their work at a showcase in the Gleneagle Hotel – a day full of excitement, pride and a real sense of achievement.

STEM is a big part of school life at The Mon, and we’ve been involved in lots of great activities over the year, such as:
- FIRST LEGO League (Explore & Challenge) – Pupils build LEGO models and use coding (like Spike Prime) to tackle fun missions based on different themes. ‘Masterpiece’ and ‘Superpowered’ have been especially popular in recent years.
- LEGO Spike – A fantastic hands-on way to learn coding and bring ideas to life.
- Bee-Bots – Our younger classes enjoy these little robots that help them learn the basics of coding and logical thinking in a fun and playful way.
Green Schools and STEM – Sustainability is really important to us, and many of our Green Schools projects now include STEM too – things like energy audits, data logging, and looking at how we can take better care of the environment.
We also love our science days with Chuck, who visits us during the year to run exciting workshops packed with experiments and discovery. The boys always look forward to his visits – they’re full of learning and craic!
STEM at The Mon is about thinking outside the box, working together, and having a go. We want our pupils to grow up confident in their ideas and ready to face the challenges of tomorrow – whether they’re building a robot, fixing a problem in the community, or simply asking great questions.
